Spring Decisions That Pay Off All Season
Spring is a critical time on the farm. With razor thin margins, it’s more important than ever for farmers to make sure spring decisions are setting your farm up for success, not quietly chipping away at your bottom line.
Drawing on more than a decade of field-level PCM data across Illinois, here are a few key spring decisions that consistently separate the most profitable farms from the rest:
- Rethink Spring Tillage
That extra pass might not be earning its keep. PCM farmers who cut back on tillage often reduce costs without sacrificing yield. Take a hard look at the fuel, time, and equipment required and consider whether that next pass is worth the expense. - Use Nitrogen Strategically
PCM has tracked nitrogen profitability for nearly a decade, and the data is clear: more isn’t always better. In almost half the years since 2015, the 151–175 lb/acre range was the most profitable on Illinois fields. And only once did the best ROI exceed 200 lbs/acre. Split applications give you flexibility to adjust based on in-season weather. Banded or variable-rate technology can help you place nutrients exactly where they’re needed and minimize waste. - Manage Cover Crops with Confidence
Got a field with overwintering cover crops? If conditions allow, let it grow to 12–18 inches before termination for maximum soil health, water retention, and weed suppression. When it’s time to plant your cash crop, consider planting green or waiting 10 days after termination for better results. - Let Last Year’s Data Shape This Year’s Decisions
The most successful farms use local ROI data to guide their plans. PCM shows you which practices performed best in your area last season so you can plan for the year ahead with confidence. - Explore Incentives Before You Miss Out
Many conservation practices come with financial support, but finding the right program can be overwhelming. That’s where your local PCM Specialist comes in. We’ll help you identify and apply for the opportunities that make the most sense for your operation.
